Jackie Speier stands with CCSF and against the ACCJC!

Congresswoman Jackie Speier, one of the first political leaders to come to the aid of our college in the struggle against the ACCJC, renewed her commitment to the college at an open forum on Monday.
She gets it: in a forum designed to highlight the deep connection between the college and the communities, families, workers and economy of San Francisco, Speier highlighted several nationally-recognized programs. After hearing from the top-rated Diagnostic Medical Imaging program, the award-winning Forensics (Speech and Debate team), and the Diversity Collaborative that is so crucial to our students, Speier said “The health of this institution is correlated to the health of this city. We need to recognize that if we want a healthy, vibrant San Francisco, we need to be sure that we have a healthy City College.”

AFT 2121 President Tim Killikelly called out the illegal and unfair actions of the ACCJC, reminding those present that both our Union and the college administration are prepared to take legal action if necessary in response to the ACCJC’s decision on “Restoration” in early February 2017.
Speier asked pointed questions of Rafael Mandelman, CCSF Board of Trustees President, who was also on the panel. “Have you thought about an advertising campaign?” Mandelman replied that the district has spent $1M per year on advertising over the last 2 years, but that the .jpg)
campaign hasn’t made a difference to our enrollment.
Sitting alongside Phil Ting and newly elected CA State Assembly member Scott Weiner, the congresswoman expressed her enduring respect and love for CCSF; “It’s our job to make sure this institution thrives. We will make sure that we do everything to make that happen.”
Update: Early Retirement Incentive Plan for eligible Full-time faculty
AFT and the District are reaching agreement on a Supplemental Early Retirement Plan. (SERP)
AFT 2121 had been concerned about loss of positions for our college. The agreement ensures that the District replace at least 50% of the those retiring under the SERP within 5 years. Apart from this, departments will continue to seek new full-time hires through the current FPAC process.
Those eligible for SERP are full-time faculty with at least 5 years of service and 55 years of age who retire effective the end of this academic year, 2016/17.
Notice to faculty eligible for the SERP will be sent soon as time is of the essence in identifying faculty interested in taking the incentive, providing counseling sessions for interested faculty, and plan for the impact of the retirements on staffing and course offerings in Fall 2017. AFT will continue to advocate for more hiring of as needed going forward.
AFT is sponsoring a Retirement Planning Day Workshop on Independent Flex Day, Thursday, January 12, at the Ocean campus. In addition to CalSTRS representatives, we are inviting representatives from Keenan and Associates to present on the SERP.
As previously announced, the SERP incentive consists of a monetary amount equal to 65% of annual base salary, with a range of options for disbursement, from 5 years to lifetime. The SERP is entirely separate from CalSTRS; it is privately administered by Keenan and Associates. Given the large number of full-time faculty 55 or over at CCSF relative to other colleges, it is anticipated that 100 faculty might retire at the end of this academic year. Under the agreement, some faculty retirements under the incentive may be deferred until Dec. 31, 2017 depending on total number of applicants and the impact on disciplines/programs.
