(Today, 1/31) #ResistTrumpTuesdays: Teachers, students, parents & bears defend education
Today is the second #ResistTrumpTuesdaysaction against the confirmation that same day of Betsy DeVos — Trump’s multi-billionaire nominee for the Secretary of Education who is a lobbyist, doesn’t believe in public education, or have any knowledge about it. At her first confirmation hearing DeVos stated that teachers and students should be armed against the threat of bears.
We hope you can join teachers, parents and students tomorrow at 12pm at the Oakland Federal Building (and bring your own bear) to say DeVos is the real threat to our public education. With over a hundred financial conflicts of interest and her crusade to privatize public education, DeVos is a danger to the future of public education.
(Tomorrow, 2/1) Unite to protect health care
Trump and the Republican Congress have made clear they will try to gut Obamacare and privatize Medicare. On Wednesday, we’ll be demanding affordable healthcare for all and taking on the insurance profiteers at a state hearing on skyrocketing healthcare costs.
Join us tomorrow from 3pm- 6pm at the State Building (455 Golden Gate Ave., Lower Level) in SF. Do you have a personal story about how increased health care costs have created a hardship for you or for your family? Email organizer Athena Waid (awaid@aft2121.org) to be put on the speakers list.
(Thursday, 2/2 deadline) SERP

We have accomplished so much together. In this era of Trump, our victories have inspired union locals around the state and ensured City College will continue to serve our communities for many years.
Let’s celebrate our successes! Join us for a party this Friday at the Ocean Ale House (1314 Ocean Avenue) from 3:30-6pm. Light refreshments. Cash bar.
AFT opposes Trump’s Executive Orders: Information & resources
We oppose Trump’s orders, the racist and xenophobic logic that underlies them, the havoc they have created in the lives of those affected, and the damage they have done to America’s standing in the world and to our national security. According to experts, they will make our country less, not more, secure.
AFT has put together an info page to assist those affected and as a place to find other resources to fight this outrageous abuse of power. We urge you to share these resources as broadly as possible.
Fightback: Rapid Response Network
Our union has joined the Bay Area Rapid Response Network, organized by our strong ally Jobs with Justice, to defend our communities and respond to raids and repression by standing stronger together. You can join by texting “RESIST” to 41-411 or click to sign-up for local actions to resist racism, sexism and hate!
