UPDATE — New location to resist hate!

BREAKING: Patriot’s Prayer has decided to cancel their Crissy Field event in favor of a press conference at Alamo Square Park. Anyone who was planning to go to Crissy Field should now plan to meet our AFT 2121 contingent at 11AM in front of 650 Steiner, near the corner of Steiner & Hayes. We’re not taking our green union banner to this action anymore due to potential restrictions. So, if you can, please wear your AFT 2121 t-shirt instead.

The Harvey Milk Plaza event, the events in Berkeley, and all of the other actions around our City to resist hate are still going forward as planned (details below). Please be sure to RSVP to the AFT 2121 leader at each protest site. If you’ve already RSVP’d please do so again. And be sure to check out Bay Resistance’s guide to these actions at bit.ly/resistws, which includes important safety tips.

Wherever the white supremacists are, we know that their presence is toxic and we will resist. Our gathering is a show of solidarity with all our communities. This is a victory; not only have the white supremacists retreated toward a a smaller space by holding a “press conference” at Alamo Square, they know that their message of hate won’t stand up to the light in this town. Let’s celebrate this victory, come out and connect with organizations doing good work to protect people of color, immigrants, LGBT rights, and workers — let’s stand up to the politics of oppression!

Be courageous. Be careful. Organize to end white supremacy.

We condemn the hatred that white supremacists and neo-Nazis stand for and Trump’s wink and a nod to these forces of hate.

Since the violence and murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville, thousands of Americans from across the country have come together in powerful demonstrations of racial justice and solidarity. But it’s not over. There are planned neo-Nazi and white supremacists rallies in the Bay Area this Saturday, August 26th in San Francisco and Sunday, August 27th in Berkeley.

While there are diverse ideas about how to respond, we support pushing back against hate, and we are certain of one thing: It’s vitally important for our members to stand up and be counted, and our AFT 2121 Executive Board is asking you to join us and make that resistance public. We are working with the organizers of four events responding to these rallies and AFT 2121 leaders will be attending all four actions below. Please connect with us and RSVP if you are coming. We recommend you come and stay with a group; this will help us to stay safer together. We do not plan on physical confrontation with white supremacists, but there are risks in being in the vicinity of their rallies and they do have a clear history of violent actions. Be sure to check out Bay Resistance’s guide to these actions at bit.ly/resistws, which includes important safety tips.

Organizing is still happening and info below may change. Follow Bay Resistance onFacebook for last-minute updates and more actions. Text RESIST to 41411 for rapid response text updates.

    – Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) will march as a large group to Berkeley City Hall, across the street from the white supremacist action. AFT 2121 Leader contact is Wynd Kaufmyn, please RSVP to her ASAP if you are going to this action (wendypalestine@gmail.com, 510-714-8687).

Please note that there are risks to those who choose to participate—and really to all of us when white supremacy is permitted to fester and publicly emboldened. We know from previous white supremacist actions in the area that regardless of what we do, the white supremacists are likely to incite violence and may even attack isolated people on the surrounding streets. AFT 2121 is a founding member of the coalition Bay Resistance, whose comprehensive guide to saying no to white supremacy and racism this weekend is an important resource: bit.ly/resistws.

Whether we choose to line up in front of the fascists to oppose their racism; rally to celebrate our values of justice and inclusion at a different location; provide childcare for marchers with little ones; or simply show up en masse to overwhelm them with our presence, we can all contribute. Silence is not an option. We must use our voices to resist this hate.
