Unemployment

2023 UPDATE

  • EDD has been overwhelmed and slow. Apply as soon as possible to leave plenty of time for your claim to be processed.
  • EDD has also been aggressive about denying claims and pursuing anything that might be a falsehood or a mistake. Be careful in your application.
Do not say that you are in a break, a recess, or between semesters.
    — Even if you expect to be assigned next semester, that assignment is not guaranteed.
    — Your assignment ended and you are unemployed.

EDD BASICS

  • Faculty who work part-time are entitled to unemployment benefits when our assignments end each semester.
  • We are considered unemployed when our assignments end, even if our employers don’t formally lay us off. We are not on break or in a recess period.
  • We’re eligible whether or not we expect to have an assignment the following semester. Those assignments are not guaranteed.
  • Apply on or immediately after your last day of work.
    — If you have semester-long assignments, the last day is officially the last instructional day of the semester, even if that doesn’t match your specific work schedule. For Spring 2023, that’s May 24th.
    — If you have only short-term assignments, your official last day of work is the last day of your assignment.
  • If your CCSF assignment ends but you still have some work, you may still be eligible. If you’re not sure they’ll consider you unemployed, the best way to find out is to apply.
  • When you apply for benefits, you must report your earnings. If you have another employer, you’ll have to report your income from each employer separately.
  • Apply on the EDD website
