Our AFT 2121 Executive Board and our rank-and-file General Membership have voted to stand with our Associated Students and CCSF Solidarity Committee student leaders in opposing the arming of CCSF campus police. Our first concern is the safety of our students. We don’t believe that arming our campus police is the way forward.
The fact that our police have been able to keep our community safe without guns for the last many decades is a fact that should be celebrated and honored, and should serve as a model for other schools.
We are concerned that arming the police may lead to an incident where a student is injured or even killed on campus. Many students of color will not feel safer because the police are armed. Particularly at this time of increased fear among our immigrant students arming our police would not be wise.
You can help today by coming out to the Academic Senate meeting at 2:30pm at Chinatown Campus in room 402 to urge them to maintain their position against arming campus police.
