Negotiations update

Dear Colleagues,
Here is a summary of our Feb. 28 contract negotiation session:
  • We reached Tentative Agreement on a streamlined transfer process allowing faculty to move from one department and allowing hiring committees to pre-empt the external application process if they find a qualified internal applicant.
  • We also reached agreement on the Summer 2019 calendar.
  • The District ‘s administration’s new finance team shared preliminary budget information, and will share more with our team’s budget subcommittee in a meeting on Thurs. 3-1.
  • We rejected the District’s proposal for evaluation because it interferes with the Department Chairs’ Council’s contractual rights.
  • We also rejected the District’s proposal on a streamlined process for tenure review of upgraded faculty members (even though we agreed with the spirit of the proposal) because our attorney believes that the proposal conflicts with the Education Code.
FLEX DAY UNION MEETINGS: The negotiations team will give a Flex Day presentation on Tues. Mar. 6 at both 10-11:30am and 1-2:30pm in Conlan 101. Please come to one of the sessions. The focus will be on our Contract Campaign and Negotiations. We will discuss the threat on our union from the Janus v. AFSCME Supreme Court case and what we can do to protect our union. The presentation will also allow members to use the interactive salary analysis tool that our team’s budget advisor, Doug Orr, developed to determine how best to raise faculty salaries above the Bay-10 median.
Your Contract Negotiation Team,
Chris Hanzo, Tim Killikelly, Malaika Finkelstein, Wynd Kaufmyn, David Pieper, Tracee Wong, Mary Bravewoman, Barbara Johnson, Linda O’Roke, Wendy Owens, Jenny Worley, John Carrese

More: How can I support my Bargaining Team?

  • Open negotiations will continue next Wednesday from 1:00-5:00 in MUB 238. All faculty are invited. Before attending, please review our open negotiations guidelines.
  • The gains we’ve made in our contract campaign, our fight against the ACCJC, and victory with Free City were made possible by collectively pooling our resources, including our union dues. The hundreds of faculty who have chosen to re-commit to our Union this semester by signing our new membership form — with its loud, proud commitment to “stick with our union” for a full calendar year —  have put us in a powerful position for our latest round of negotiations. If you have not done so this school year, please sign a new AFT 2121 membership form.
