Grow our College: Successful push-back

Before the winter break, Chancellor Rocha agreed to AFT 2121’s proposed moratorium on class cancellations during the break. Nevertheless, a week before classes began, administrators contacted AFT to discuss canceling up to 150 low-enrolled classes before the end of break. AFT insisted that the college uphold the Chancellor’s promise, and the administration backed off. As a result, fewer than 15 classes that have been cancelled to our knowledge.

Faculty celebrated this victory at last week’s flex day AFT session, and then took action against future class cuts. Each member labeled a plant seedling with the title of a class, and attached their handwritten”growing instructions” for that class. We then delivered the seedlings to the Chancellor’s office to remind him of his commitment to grow our college. We will continue vigilant observations of any reductions to our course offerings.

Next steps:

AFT 2121 members have formed a Grow Our College Action Team to respond with immediate direct action in the event of cancellations:

  • If your class is cancelled, immediately fill out this formone time for each lost class and contact your Precinct Rep.
  • Help continue the work we started together last semester against the downsizing of our community college. Next discussion will be held at our Delegate Assembly on Tuesday, 1/29 from 3-5pm in MUB 238.
  • RSVP to join the Grow our College Action Team.

Appreciate KQED?

Once again KQED has called for help with it’s fund-raising efforts. If you are available Thursday, February 7, 2019 from 3:30- 6:30pm, please join our group at the Mariposa St. studio to answer phones and input info so KQED can secure the support it needs to continue serving the Bay Area. Please let Retiree Organizer, Kim Lee me know as soon as you can (klee101010@gmail.com).

Check your check

The first month of every semester is when CCSF administration makes most of their mistakes with pay and load. We don’t expect January to be as bad as last August, but don’t wait until payday to find out. Check NOW.

  • If your load is wrong, your pay will be wrong. Contact your chair immediately to make a correction. Also tell your precinct rep.
  • After payday, if your pay is still incorrect, tell your chair and precinct rep immediately. Also use our form to report the problem directly to payroll and to AFT. Go to www.aft2121.org, choose Resources, then Report Payroll Problems.

Stand with UTLA on strike!

On Monday, January 14, UTLA members began walking the picket line in a historic stand to protect the future of public education in Los Angeles, and they need our help.

After years of divestment in LA schools, UTLA members and community partners are standing up to ensure that every student receives the quality education they deserve. They seek what every school district in the state should provide: smaller class sizes; more nurses, counselors, psychologists, and librarians; competitive wages; and community schools and supports for families.

We ask that you show your support for UTLA by taking a moment to sign the CFT petition in support of the courageous educators of UTLA, and their stand against austerity in LAUSD schools.

Check out UTLA’s campaign website for more information about the strike. Frequent updates will also be posted on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds.
