Coup attempt & AFT Town Hall
On January 6th, armed pro-Trump white supremacist terrorists entered the Capitol and tried to stop the confirming of our legally elected President and Vice-President. They vandalized the building and people died.
We watched in horror as some of the Capitol police literally moved out of the way and let the destruction occur. What a contrast to the militarized police presence during Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
Trump will soon be out of office, but white supremacy has not gone away. A racist, anti-democratic, authoritarian movement is among us. As educators we have a special responsibility to our students and community to help them understand these events. On Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. EST (3 pm our time), AFT National will hold a phone Town Hall to discuss the violent insurrection at the Capitol. Register here. This event is open to all AFT members.
