Rescind the layoff notices NOW

More than 500 participants joined AFT 2121 faculty and students at today’s virtual press conference (which broke Zoom capacity)! We heard from supervisors Hillary Ronen and Connie Chan, as well as speakers from Supervisor Mar and Supervisor Haney’s offices, students, faculty, and community allies. The extraordinary testimonials from students, alumni, and faculty is here

At the same moment, more than 150 people came out in-person to our Save CCSF art installation action at City Hall. We heard powerful stories from students about the transformational education they experience at City College of San Francisco and from the faculty members who foster these vital relationships and support, empowering students to seize opportunities and improve their lives through higher education. We heard from the faculty, labor allies, and community members who understand the power of higher education.

The proposed layoff of hundreds of full and part-time City College faculty is a direct threat to these educational opportunities. College Trustees and our City and State Leaders have a responsibility to protect our college and our students, which means leaving no stone unturned.

Just this morning, President Biden signed into law a federal stimulus package that includes significant COVID relief for our college. Intended to protect our vital institutions at all levels, this relief acknowledges that institutions like City College are the engines of America’s recovery. CCSF must survive this global crisis in order to provide support for the economic recovery of San Franciscans most in need.

This new relief funding can and must be used to defend our college and the education it provides to the Bay Area, to defend the jobs and classes and services that make us a vital San Francisco resource.

In the light of the federal government’s commitment to recovery, we call on our administration and our elected trustees to immediately rescind the layoff notices and commit to restoring our City College.

But there are no quick fixes; we need long-term solutions in addition to last-minute rescues. San Francisco students need access to the courses and services our part-time and full-time faculty provide, yet years of chronic underfunding and disinvestment leave City College vulnerable. City and State leaders must take action now to protect our College in the immediate and long term– the future of our students and our City depend on it.

Next Steps: Take Action Now!

Over 150 faculty, students and labor leaders, and community allies participated in AFT 2121’s Action at City Hall, even while a virtual rally and press conference capped out at 500 on Zoom.
