Devastating Night: The Fight Continues

Dear members,

I am heartsick writing this. The Board of “Trustees” just voted to issue 38 layoff notices to full-time faculty, which will require the termination of 138 part-time faculty. All trustees voted for it except for Alan Wong and Student Trustee Malinalli Villalobos. While we are glad the number is 38 rather than 58, the effect will be devastating: hundreds of classes shuttered and thousands of students denied opportunity.

We’ll get more information out later with specifics about what might happen next. For now, it’s important to say that no ethical person would close classes and throw employees out on the street during a budget surplus. As we told the BOT today: Your “Yes” vote today is our “No” vote in November.

Working with our allies, we will replace the board members who voted for this disaster. As part of the CCSF Revenue Unity Coalition with SEIU 1021 & SF Building Trades, we also plan to bring a revenue measure to San Francisco voters in November to address the long-term problem of the State’s underfunding. We will raise revenue to restore classes, programs, and jobs, and get us growing again. And then we will turn back to making ourselves strike-ready so that we can win the contract we deserve.

We and our allies have fought hard, especially this week (see recent coverage in SF GateKTVU, & KQED), and the fight is ongoing.

Department budgets will ultimately determine how many of us are working in fall, and how many classes and programs are offered. Even with layoffs, we will still have work if the assignments are there. The AFT 2121 political team will be working to build external political pressure on the chancellor and the college to keep classes open with the resources we have currently, while we also know we need to bring in more money for growth.

To get a revenue measure on the November ballot, we will need signatures quickly. Sign up here for signature gathering starting Tuesday May 24 and continuing until Monday July 11. We have sign-ups for the first week: pick the days that work for you and an organizer will follow up to confirm your time. The real long-term solution to shuttered classes and depressed wages is more support. That’s how we win for the good of our students, our college, and our city.
