Delegate Assembly 3-5 PM, Tuesday 9/17 on Zoom
All members are welcome to attend your union’s Delegate Assembly next Tuesday 9/17 from 3-5pm. At the meeting, we’ll continue to discuss work around enrollment and other worksite issues and get an update on key contract enforcement concerns. If you’ve been watching the news, you’ve seen that there is a growing understanding among the working class that solidarity is the path to success for workers. Have a faculty concern? This is where we work together for the benefit of all. All members are encouraged to attend. Agenda here.
You can use the same link as for other COPE & DA meetings – follow this link from your computer or smartphone. Meeting ID: 810 1671 8065, Password: 783119.

Sign Up for Campaign Mobilizations!
RSVP now for AFT 2121 mobilizations for the November 2024 election cycle! Every Saturday and Sunday in September, faculty will be joining our endorsed candidates to knock doors, drop candidate literature, and talk to San Francisco residents about a better future for our school and our city.
Politics is about making strategic choices for the good of our contract, our students, and our college. Your college has been hit hard by cuts and layoffs–think of the devastating impact the layoff of tenured faculty has had on English 1A alone. Our college must do better.
Alan Wong was the lone vote against layoffs and a key voice for our new contract. He has worked to encourage competitive salaries for faculty and defended student access to essential services and classes.
AFT’s mobilizations this fall will focus on talking to San Franciscans about Alan Wong and our other endorsed candidates. For smart growth and a strong future for our college, sign up here to join mobilizations for Alan Wong and our other endorsed candidates.
Voluntary Sick Leave Bank Deduction
The Voluntary Sick Leave Bank or VSLB is another union benefit that AFT 2121 fought for and won through collective advocacy. The VSLB provides income protection for up to 100 days for faculty who experience catastrophic illness or injury. Both full- and part-time faculty are eligible, and we encourage everyone to participate. Faculty can only join periodically when the bank opens for contributions.
The last call for contributions to the VSLB closed on 2/29/24. Although the call went out last winter, the District has processed contributions in our August paychecks. For full-timers, this means a deduction of 1 day from the 10 annual days added to your sick leave balance. For part-timers, this means a deduction of 1 hour for PTers working up to 50%, or 2 hours for PTers working more than 50%.
It’s always a good idea for faculty to check their checks for errors, including sick leave. And of course, report any errors through the payroll reporting form.
Call for Input on Qualities Needed in the Next Chancellor!
This week we learned that the firm who will be supporting the search for a new chancellor has put out a survey for all members of the college community to complete. The search firm would like information about the qualities and attributes that we need or desire in the next chancellor. The ultimate goal of this search process is to have a new chancellor hired before the next school year begins.
As you consider the qualities you and your department need in a new chancellor, let’s remember some of the challenges you and your union have overcome in the past few years and a possible different path in the future.
Pay and working conditions – We just had a chancellor who engaged in repeated bad faith bargaining for your new salary & contract ⇒ we could have a chancellor who values our voice and labor.
Budget priorities – We just had a chancellor who chose to pad reserves while students overwhelmed waitlists and full time tenured faculty were laid off ⇒ we could have a chancellor who balances fiscal concerns with CCSF’s mission, that is, serving students.
Shared governance – We have had a series of chancellors who have spurned the norms and value of shared governance. AFT & the Academic Senate should be resources not only for listening to faculty feedback, but also learning and incorporating the views of others. That’s leadership ⇒ we could have a chancellor who pursues collaborative solutions for issues at the college.
You and your students deserve a chancellor who is fully committed to fulfilling our mission and serving our students: that means listening to employees and students, collaborating with respect and vision, respecting the essential principle of shared governance, and taking hard but courageous stands to put students first.
The link to the survey is here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/
We have until Monday, September 16 to submit responses to the survey. The college has also provided two opportunities for faculty to participate in listening sessions via Zoom.
Faculty: Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 5:00 and Thursday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 pm
