CFT Unemployment Insurance Workshop – Thursday 12/12, 4-5:30pm on ZoomREGISTER HERE for CFT’s unemployment insurance workshop! If you are part-time faculty, then it is very important that you know that you’re eligible for unemployment both over winter break and summer. Even if you expect to be teaching the following semester, the hard truth is that part-time faculty are not assured future assignments so it’s important, if you haven’t already, that you familiarize yourselves with the unemployment insurance process. CFT is our state-wide affiliate, and their workshops are open to all AFT 2121 members. This one will guide contingent faculty through the online unemployment filing process for both new and reopened claims. It will include information about how to deal with phone interviews, denials, and appeals. The presenter will be John Govsky. He is a CFT vice president and the creator of Contingent World. He has many years of experience researching, writing about, and assisting contingent faculty with unemployment issues. You can also check out AFT 2121’s guide to EDD, with step-by-step instructions, resources, and information specific to our college. If You’re a PTer Leaving Subsidized Covered California Healthcare, Be Aware:AFT 2121 has fought for and won expanded healthcare coverage for PT faculty. This is something to be proud of, but it’s also important to be aware of the consequences for faculty currently receiving subsidized healthcare through Covered California. PT faculty eligible for employer sponsored healthcare are no longer eligible for Covered CA subsidies. IMPORTANT: You are responsible for informing Covered CA. If you are teaching at least a 40% load, you are now eligible to be covered under the District’s plan. Covered CA subsidies are not ended automatically, and, if you do not inform Covered CA, you may face penalties or tax implications. There are specific instances where you could still be eligible for Covered CA. Check the Covered California Employer Coverage and Financial Help and Tool to find out more. If you now receiving reimbursements for health care premiums because you work at multiple districts and exceed the 40% threshold in that manner (see here for more info), those reimbursements will be included as income and taxed accordingly. This added “income” could affect eligibility for scholarships and other subsidies that some PT faculty with lower incomes receive. Part Time Committee Meeting – Friday 12/6, 2pm on ZoomThe part-timers committee is meeting to discuss issues of concern to part-timers. All are welcome. The meeting will be held over Zoom at 2:00pm on Friday, December 6. Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/ |
