ICE UPDATE
Dear Faculty,
There are credible reports that ICE and Customs and Border Protection are preparing for increased ‘immigration’ raids in the Bay Area as soon as today.
Understandably, our students and colleagues are apprehensive and afraid about what is to come. And while we can’t predict the future, we have a good sense of what to expect based on what we have seen in LA, Chicago, and other cities.
This is not a time for reactivity or panic; rather, it is a time to ground ourselves in our commitment to our students and one another.
In response to the impending threat to our students and communities, AFT 2121 is putting together a rapid response team with representatives at each campus.
If ICE is confirmed on campus, AFT 2121 will message members as quickly as possible. If you would like to be added to AFT 2121’s text alert list, please respond to this email with your name, cell phone number, and campus/building/work location.
Actions to take right now, before ICE comes to campus:
CHECK IN WITH YOUR STUDENTS:
- Discuss a plan of action with your students if ICE arrives.
- Provide your students with Red Cards (especially in your students’ first language)
- Consider hanging this sign in your classrooms and offices
FOR IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION:
- Extend some leniency for absences and late assignments
- Provide alternatives to completing assessments and turning in assignments (take-home exams, Canvas uploads, email submissions)
Upon confirmation that ICE is on campus:
CLOSE ALL PRIVATE SPACE DOORS IN YOUR WORKSPACE.
ICE can access public areas of a school campus, such as an open courtyard or main lobby, without a warrant. However, private spaces like classrooms, administrative offices, and fenced-in schoolyards require a judicial warrant for entry.
- This means doors to classrooms, offices, student Centers, etc.
- These locations are recognized as PRIVATE SPACES and NOT open to the public.
- Upon closing doors, you can say, “We are currently designating private spaces on campus.
Put the following phone numbers in your contacts now, & call them if you spot ICE:
- CCSF Campus Police: (415) 239-3200 or Chancellor at (415) 239-3556
- San Francisco Rapid Response Line: (415) 200-1548
INVITE STUDENTS IN HALLWAYS AND OTHER NON-PRIVATE SPACES TO ENTER A PRIVATE SPACE.
Inform that ICE has been confirmed on campus and that you are inviting them into a private space.
- If ICE is confirmed to be off campus, remind students that the safer place to be is on campus.
HAND OUT RED CARDS SO THAT STUDENTS UNDERSTAND THEIR RIGHT TO REMAIN SILENT AND THEIR PROTECTIONS AGAINST UNREASONABLE SEARCH AND SEISURE.
- Remind students that if they want to exercise their right to remain silent, they must verbally state, “I’m invoking my right to remain silent” or something similar.
These are extraordinary times, but we are not alone in facing down this threat to our students and communities. There is a growing movement of resistance with thousands of people in the Bay Area training up to protect our communities. Remember to prepare, not panic. We are all in this together.
In solidarity,
Bravewoman
AFT 2121 President
