Bargaining Team Elections
AFT 2121 is a democratic, rank-and-file led union. We win our best contracts when we work together, in bargaining and in the organizing that drives it. We urge all faculty to talk to your precinct rep about filling out a bargaining survey and to consider running for your union bargaining team. Successful unions run contract campaigns, i.e. organize, because they know that winning at the bargaining table is not about arguments–it’s about unity, power, and problem solving.
Our contract expires June 30. Now is the time to engage. When bargaining works, our bargaining team represents every member of our bargaining unit and is part of a unified and organized workplace. You can make a difference in this work! How can your voice and that of your colleagues be part of this process? By running for the bargaining team or encouraging a colleague to do so. See the Bargaining Team Job Description and the Bargaining Team Application for more information. All nomination materials must be turned in by Monday, 1/19/26.
What Training is Required?
Your Contract Enforcement Team has clarification on recent communications from the District over trainings run by ASCIP E-Learning. There was some confusion in the college’s messaging over which of these trainings are required and which are recommended.
We’ve confirmed that the following training is mandated by the state for all faculty and must be completed.
- Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prevention
- For employees (SB 1343), Every 2 years, 1 hour
- For supervisors (AB 1825), Every 2 years, 2 hours
- Workplace Violence Prevention (SB553) – all employees, 23 minutes
The following trainings are recommended by the District’s Risk Management Office, but are NOT required for faculty to complete.
- Blood borne Pathogens (CCR Title 8, § 5193) – all employees, 20 minutes
- Mandated Reporter/Professional Boundaries (AB 1432/1913) – non-childcare providers, 54 minutes
Additional time for required training is a growing concern as the legislature adds requirements to an already full faculty plate. Faculty can complete required or recommended trainings during FLEX days. The District’s position is that the trainings, both mandated and recommended, are for all employees who may find themselves involved in situations covered by the trainings listed above.
There may be additional trainings required depending on your field–for example, the mandated reporter training for childcare providers. For now the District has paused sending future reminders on optional trainings; however, the trainings which have already been released will stay in your ASCIP queue until you complete the training.

AAUP/AFT v. Trump: Court blocks attacks on University of California system
In a historic wall-to-wall labor union lawsuit led by the American Association of University Professors and the AFT, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has issued a preliminary injunction that will stop the Trump administration’s attempt to unlawfully stifle free speech and academic freedom across the University of California system. This marks a huge win for the broad coalition of faculty, staff, students and unions that brought the lawsuit seeking to defend their First Amendment rights and to restore critical research funding.

National Council of Nonprofits v. McMahon
Cities, unions and others sue administration for weaponizing Public Service Loan Forgiveness
On Nov. 3, a diverse coalition of cities, labor unions, including the AFT, and nonprofit advocacy organizations filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its unlawful Public Service Loan Forgiveness rule.
The rule would allow Education Secretary Linda McMahon to disqualify employers she considers to be engaging in “substantially illegal activities.”
“Public Service Loan Forgiveness was created by a Republican president and Democratic senators to help attract and retain teachers, nurses, firefighters and so many others who’ve dedicated their careers to helping others,” said AFT President Randi Weingarten. “Trump wants to change that by imposing an ideological litmus test on millions of public servants and their employers. … It will chill protected speech, drain talent from desperately needed jobs helping vulnerable communities, and saddle remaining workers with an insurmountable debt load.”
