Financial Planning Day 1/8 | Applying for Unemployment over Winter Break

Financial Planning Day January 8 – registration is now open!!

Given the political and economic winds these days, planning for our financial futures as educators is more important than ever.

The younger you are when you start planning your financial future, the more secure that future will be. One part of that future will be your retirement. It’s never too soon to start learning about your options and putting a plan in place.

Whether retirement is a distant dream or an approaching reality, all CCSF union members are invited to the 17th annual Financial Planning Day during Independent Flex Day on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 9 AM – 2 PM. This event is organized by the Retiree Chapter of AFT 2121.

The event will be held virtually again this year. There will be morning and afternoon workshops on many aspects of financial planning such as CalSTRS, Social Security and Medicare and general retirement planning.

Schedule is here: tinyurl.com/fpdsch

Those who register by January 4 will be emailed conference details. You may register up to and even on the day of the event. For questions about disability accommodations in place, contact anvanderslice@gmail.com by January 2. Please note each workshop is eligible for 1.25 units of CCSF Professional Development FLEX activity credit.

Applying for Unemployment over Winter Break

Thanks in large part to the work of former AFT 2121 Grievance Officer Cliff Liehe, Community College part-time faculty throughout California qualify for Unemployment Insurance during winter and summer breaks. However, the EDD does not make the process easy!  For guidance on eligibility and how to apply, visit the website of CFT, AFT 2121’s state affiliate: https://www.cft.org/pod/your-guide-unemployment. Your claim begins when you file, not when the term ends, and you can’t file early. It’s best to file right after your last day – the day of your last final exam. More questions? Contact aft@aft2121.org.
