SAN FRANCISCO WORKERS AND THEIR FAMILIES COUNT ON FREE CITY COLLEGE
Dear FRIEND,
As part of his extensive layoffs and cuts proposed in this year’s budget, Mayor Lurie plans to cut funding to the Free City program, which makes community college free and accessible for all San Francisco residents. The cuts would reshape the program by eliminating grants to low-income students, impacting many of San Francisco’s most financially vulnerable. That’s why we’re making an urgent call to all CCSF supporters to show up and defend Free City next Wednesday, May 20th at 3pm at City Hall – RSVP here.

Free City makes it possible for thousands of students every year to access high quality education and job training. Since labor and community won this one-of-a-kind program, working class San Franciscans have used Free City to start their college educations, train (and retrain) for union jobs, and fulfill their dreams.
This is why students, City College faculty, labor, and community members are coming together to defend Free City and share our stories about the impact Free City has on our lives and communities. You have an opportunity to speak out and influence key decision-makers at the Budget and Appropriations Committee hearing next week. Will you join us in showing your support for Free City at the Budget and Appropriations Committee hearing on Wednesday, May 20th at 3pm at City Hall? RSVP here!
This is our chance to make sure our city leaders understand the importance of Free City and that they work to defend it. We will be sharing our stories about how Free City has impacted our lives and our communities – join us in telling yours!
Students, labor, and community members fought to make City College free and accessible and won. In 2017, San Francisco became the first city in the nation to offer tuition-free higher education for all residents, and voters raised the revenue to do it with Prop W, a transfer tax on high-end real estate. This important victory expanded access to college for thousands of diverse students, boosted City College enrollment, and made San Francisco a more affordable place to live and thrive.
The current proposed cuts violate a 10-year commitment signed by the City and will prevent thousands of working class residents from accessing free higher education. We are coming together again to defend this program, which has changed the lives of so many San Francisco residents from all walks of life.
Join us to share your story and show your support for a fully funded Free City program!
AFT 2121, the faculty union at CCSF, is proud of what our college means to San Franciscans, and we stand with our students and our community to say: SF STUDENTS DESERVE FREE CITY!
