Update on Bargaining: Working for the City College Our Students Deserve

Dear Faculty,

Last year, AFT faculty organizers had hundreds upon hundreds of conversations around your priorities in bargaining for a new contract. Now, your elected team of AFT bargaining members are putting those priorities into action. In this process, your team is counting on YOU to continue taking action to show the District that faculty stand united for the strong contract we deserve. Unity and leverage are how we win.

Yesterday afternoon, we had our third negotiating session with the District, and in the coming weeks, as your campaign for a new contract heats up, we will be pursuing the following key priorities:

  1. Protecting City College’s vital community programs: from ESL to Nursing, many essential CCSF programs need more FT staffing to continue serving students. Your team is taking a stand against overwork and for targeted FT hiring as well as greater job stability for PT and FT faculty.
  2. Protecting City College students and employees from ICE: we need commitments, planning, and communication systems in place to prepare in advance for any possible ICE surges in our City, like we faced last fall. This is a matter of workplace safety for employees and most importantly a core issue for the safety and well being of our students. City College is the heart of immigrant SF, and we want our contract to recognize that.
  3. Investing in City College educators so we can afford to live in the City we serve: full-time CCSF educators are paid in the bottom 40% of the state, despite living in one of the most expensive cities in the country. This is unsustainable for faculty as well as our programs. Your team will be demanding the very best possible for our faculty.

Your team has now offered 14 proposals, the District 7, and our next bargaining session is Wednesday, September 2, from 3-6:30pm in HBB (Room TBD). We expect to discuss Evaluations, Assignments, Remote Work, and Retiree Email and Facilities access.

  • To RSVP for this session, reply YES to this email
  • See this proposal tracker for a full list of proposals exchanged so far.

This is an escalating campaign–meaning the top priorities you named on the bargaining survey (competitive salaries and benefits, understaffing/program support, & protecting students from ICE) will be discussed later in September and October as we continue to build our unity and power. In the coming days, AFT will be circulating a Campaign Pledge–your bargaining team encourages all faculty to sign it and take action for the sake of your contract and our students.
