Seniority for Faculty Working Part-Time

Seniority lists are newly created every semester. They always appear to be out of date, since they can’t account for the semester in which they’re created. For example, the list created in September 2023 accounts for Spring 2023 assignments. It will be used to make Spring 2024 assignments.

Part-time faculty are ranked by semesters worked:

  • In your first semester, your seniority is 0.
  • Summers do not count.
  •  Fall and Spring semesters count if your assignment spanned at least 75% of the calendar for the semester. Load does not matter; only dates. If you worked one day per week all semester, it counts. If you worked 6 days a week for four weeks, it does not count.
  • This can be different from your semester count for pay purposes.

Your seniority is only one number, even if you work in multiple departments. There is no seniority “in” a particular department, area, or assignment. If you’re listed in multiple departments, you should have the same seniority number in both places.

Ties are broken by a computerized random drawing. This drawing is re-done every semester. That means the order will change, but it will not alternate in a predictable way.

Retirees who have come back to work part-time do not acquire seniority and are not listed here.

If you spot a mistake on these lists, talk to your chair. HR can correct the lists easily once a chair confirms the correct information.
