Strike averted! …For now

Last week AFT 2121 Executive Board unanimously voted to cancel the Strike Authorization Vote and plans for a One-Day Strike on Dec 7th after District administration agreed to rescind illegal letters to retirees and committed to respecting faculty rights to protected activities.
Thanks to your organizing work District administration knew our strike threat was real. We demonstrated our power and District administration backed down, acted to remedy our charges against it, and will complete talks with AFT 2121—hopefully this time in good faith.
AFT 2121 hopes that the administration’s action in this case signals a new direction in negotiations, one that will lead to a fair contract. However faculty should remain prepared to strike if necessary as we continue negotiations. For now it’s time to celebrate our united strength!

Report exposes critical threats to higher education in San Francisco‬

Last week Jobs with Justice released a new reportfrom its Workers’ Rights Board Hearing to examine the current state of faculty working conditions at San Francisco’s public colleges and reveal how faculty working conditions affect student learning conditions. The report finds that  faculty at ‪CCSF‬, SFAI, and SF State who dedicate their careers to helping students achieve their dreams, can barely fulfill their own.

‘“The current corporate model of higher education does not adequately serve students, provide for faculty or advance the civic values of colleges and universities,” the report concludes, noting that stability for faculty must be “at the center” of any solutions.’

Membership matters!

If you are a current member – we are glad you’re involved in our union! If you are not yet a member, please fill out your membership form and get it back to your precinct rep or to the AFT 2121 office (311 Miramar Ave.) as soon as possible. When you become a member of your union you…
•build power
•support your negotiating team
•stand together with over 1200 of your colleagues
•ensure the healthy future of the labor movement*
*All unions currently face a Supreme Court case known as Friedrichs which could eliminate “agency fee.” This a right-wing attack on unions’ bargaining power, that would erode membership and union strength.
