Report: Payroll action
Yesterday, AFT met with Chancellor Rocha to address the District’s ongoing failure to provide timely and complete pay. During the meeting, AFT members held a musical action outside to remind the Chancellor how urgently we need a solution. Towards the end of the meeting members filed into the meeting to deliver their personal messages about why our work is important to the Chancellor.
All affected faculty have now received at least some of their pay. For those who remain underpaid the District was unwilling or unable to give AFT a firm timeline for when faculty can expect to be made whole. AFT will continue to push for off-cycle checks to be cut immediately.
The Chancellor acknowledged the structural flaws within FLAC and the need to immediately implement a system that works. Long-term the district has committed to a system that reduces the delays in assignment processing, allows faculty to easily read their paychecks and put an end to the excessive time and resources that currently go into rectifying payroll errors.
In the interim, Dianna Gonzalez the VC of HR has been tasked with oversight of payroll to prevent a repeat of this situation in the September payroll and beyond until a permanent solution is implemented. She has committed to ensuring the benefits of all affected faculty accurately reflect their assignment.
AFT also asked the Chancellor to address the magnitude of this semester’s class cuts. He stated that the District has run 200 more sections than last semester. However, he also stated that they are planning on a reduced schedule for the Spring. AFT has made a formal information request for specifics about which classes and programs will be affected. We cannot have a strategy for enrollment growth that focuses on cutting classes; AFT will continue to push back on the District’s approach to class cuts and demand the the District communicate a comprehensive plan that does not deprive our students of educational opportunities.
