Outrage over Admin raises | Saturday Prop A shoot

Outrage over Admin raises

Huge thanks to all AFT 2121 members and our students and community who came out today to show their outrage over the obscene five- and six-figure raises recently awarded to administrators!

Enraged at the massive raises — which came on the heels of layoffs, cuts to library services and reassigned time, and over 100 class cancellations – more than 200 faculty, students, labor allies, and community members gathered at Conlan Hall, dressed in red and carrying signs highlighting the $200-250K+ salaries of various high-level administrators. Faculty and students from other campuses sent solidarity photos throughout the day in union with our fight back expressing what the hundreds of thousand of dollars in admin raises could be used for instead.

After speakers led the crowd in chants of “Shame!” and “Education, not administration!” we marched up to the Chancellor’s office, where we left dozens of posters expressing our anger and listing our demands: 1) an immediate special meeting of the Board of Trustees Budget Committee, 2) the reversal of the raises, and 3) the re-direction of funds toward classes, counseling, and library services.

What’s next?
As a result of our powerful response, our first demand has already been met: the Board Budget Committee has scheduled a public meeting for Thursday, Sept. 19, at 9:00am (location TBA) to discuss the raises. We urge all faculty to attend, speak out, and stand with AFT 2121 to demand that our Trustees put students’ education before administration. To join us, please RSVP and share or call Athena at 415-585-2121.
