YOUR UNION ENDORSEMENTS FOR THE NOVEMBER 2018 ELECTION

The American Federation of Teachers 2121 is proud to announce our Committee on Political Education (COPE) endorsements for the November 6, 2018 election. Our endorsed candidates share our commitment to protecting quality public education: they understand the support and respect our educators need to keep our standards for student learning conditions high.

The endorsements were made at the August 16th COPE meeting. Any member of our union can participate in our Union’s Committee on Political Education. To get involved, please email James Tracy, AFT 2121 Political Director by clicking HERE.

SAN FRANCISCO BOARD OF SUPERVISORS

  • GORDON MAR, DISTRICT 4 (Sunset)
Gordon Mar, the former Executive Director of Jobs With Justice San Francisco, worked closely with our union to save our College from closure and then to win the Free City campaign. His platform proposes bringing more CCSF classes to the Sunset and improving services for families. Also endorsed by: Sierra Club and San Francisco Tenants Union.
  • MATT HANEY, DISTRICT 6 (South of Market, Treasure Island, Tenderloin, North Mission)
Matt Haney will bring his experience as member of the Board of Education to City Hall. We were impressed with his commitment to protecting renters from displacement, and his record of promoting equity in public education. Also endorsed by: California Nurses Association and the San Francisco Latino Democratic Club.
  • SHAMANN WALTON, DISTRICT 10 (Bayview/Hunter’s Point/Potrero Hill)
Shamann Walton was born in San Francisco and has helped build job training, violence intervention and affordable housing to his district. Walton is the Executive Director or Young Community Developers and also serves on the Board of Education. Also endorsed by: Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club and the Teamsters Joint Council.

Our COPE also endorsed TONY Kelly as our #2 endorsement in District 10. We appreciate his record of fighting to preserve blue collar jobs and neighborhood activism on Potrero Hill.

CITY COLLEGE OF SAN FRANCISCO BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The three current members of the Board of Trustees have been active on the BOT during a successful contract negotiation.

SAN FRANCISCO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION

We are proud to join our sister union, United Educator of San Francisco, in endorsing three dynamic leaders for the Board of Education.

  • ALISON COLLINS
Alison Collins is a parent with years of experience advocating for better schools and defending quality public education. She understands education policy and will be a strong voice for teachers and underserved students.
  • LI MIAO LOVETT
We are so excited to have an AFT 2121 member in the race! Li Lovett is an experienced union activist, and Counselor. Lovett was a powerhouse leader in the fight to save City Colleges accreditation and the Free City campaign.
  • FAAUUGA MOLIGA
Faauuga Moliga has created numerous programs and partnerships to improve student achievement in the San Francisco Unified School District. A native of San Francisco, he has earned broad support from labor and community organizations he has worked with.

SAN FRANCISCO BALLOT MEASURES

  • PROPOSITION C, VOTE YES!
With in 1 in 10 of California’s college students homeless, this was a no brainer for us. Proposition C takes a small tax increase on very big business and expands funding for Supportive Housing, Mental Health services, and shelter. Opposed by the San Francisco Republican Party.
  • PROPOSITION E, VOTE YES!
Returns a portion of Hotel Tax monies to fund programs supported by the SF Arts Commission. With a strong emphasis on cultural equity, this initiative secures jobs that graduates from CCSF’s Arts programs will access.

TONY THURMOND FOR STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF INSRUCTION

The CFT and AFT 2121 endorse Richmond Assemblymember Tony Thurmond for state superintendent of public instruction. President Josh Pechthalt said Thurmond, a former social worker, has demonstrated “time and again he is a champion of public education. His policy positions solidly align him with the needs of students, parents, and educators.”

He recognizes the critical need to address California’s teacher shortage, and advocates for attracting and retaining qualified educators by providing affordable housing, recruitment bonuses, scholarships and higher wages. He supports raising California up from near the bottom of the states in per pupil funding through progressive tax reforms. He sponsored a bill to bolster early childhood education enrollment by taxing private prison corporations.

In comparison to the Trump/DeVos education agenda, Thurmond—a former school board member—opposes vouchers and other schemes to shift taxpayer dollars from public education to private hands. He believes charter schools should be held to the same standards of access, transparency and accountability as public schools, and firmly opposes for-profit charters.

STATE BALLOT MEASURES

  • PROPOSITION 10,VOTE YES!
Our housing justice allies know the Costa-Hawkins Act is a key driver in the current housing affordability crisis, which is felt in every urban area in the state. Repeal of the Costa-Hawkins Act would give cities and counties the ability to implement rent control as they need to.
  • PROPOSITION 1, VOTE YES!
    Builds affordable housing for Veterans.
